Son of Alfred and Annie Eleanor (nee WILLIAMS) JAQUEST of Watford.
His parents married 24 October 1889 at Holy Trinity, Oswestry, Salop. Annie died 10 March 1926 in Watford aged 59, and was buried 24 March in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Alfred died 23 October 1937 in Watford aged 74, and was buried 28 October, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Herbert was born 2 March 1893 in Watford, and baptised 7 April 1893 at St Mary’s, Watford. He attended first Ware Infants’ School, Herts; then St Mary’s C of E School, Ware, from 1 June 1900 to 12 September 1902.
On the 1901 Census, aged 8 he lived in Ware, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1911 Census, an Ordinary Seaman aged 18, he was serving on H.M.S. St George, based at Grimsby, Lincs.
Wartime Service
He enlisted 2 March 1911 for 12 years as Boy II Class: an errand boy, 5’8″ tall. He joined Vanguard 31 March 1914, and was promoted to Leading Seaman 1 May 1916.
He was entitled to the Victory, British War and Star medals, and was killed when his ship was blown up by an internal explosion. His body was not recovered for burial.
