Pre War

Born in 1890, in Great Marlow, Bucks., only son of Robert and Clara and in 1901 they were living in Bartletts Buildings, City of London, they had one servant and his father’s occupation was listed as a housekeeper.


The 1911 census shows them living at 58 Fetter Lane, London, his father is still listed as a housekeeper but he now also has a naval pension, whilst Robert was employed as a shipping clerk. 

Wartime Service

Joined the 5th Battalion which was sent to France as part of 2/1st London Brigade sailing to France from 20th January 1917.


They took part in the pursuit of the German army on its retreat to the Hindenburg line in March and then took part in the Battle of Bullecourt in May. Following this there were further actions on the Hindenburg line and Robert was killed in one of these on 17th June.

Additional Information

Probate records show that upon Robert’s death his father received £239 and 7shillings, he was still listed as living in Fetter Lane, but his parents were living at 4 Eleanor Road, Bengeo at this time.
