Pre War

Walter was born in 1891 to Edward and Caroline. They lived in Meeting Lane, Buntingford.

Recorded as born in Layston and was living in Buntingford when he enlisted in Royston.

Wartime Service

Walter was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal awarded for gallantry in the field.

Walter was awarded the DCM and the London Gazette stated that on the night of the 15th September 1915 when the Germans made a successful attack on the gun trench Walter was firing a machine gun in the captured trench. Although attacked on three sides with bombs and rifle fire he remained alone firing his gun. When it failed he picked it up and took it 50 yards in the open to a part of the trench still held by the British.

He sent his French medal home to his sister where it was displayed in Mr Fry’s shop in Buntingford High Street.
