Pre War
William JACKSON was born in Barley, Hertfordshire, on 4th March 1891, son of George Jackson a Horsekeeper on a Farm, and Susanna/Susan Jackson (nee Scripps). One of their ten children.
He was Baptised William John Jackson on 24th May 1891, in the Parish of Barley, Herts.
1891 Census William aged 1 month, living with his parents, Sisters Elizabeth (4), Ada (1), and brother Joseph (2), in Smiths End, Barley, Herts.
1901 Census, William (10) is at school, living with his parents, five sisters and three brothers in Fairlands, Stevenage, Herts.
1911 Census, William (20), a farm Labourer, his parents, four brothers and sister Edith (12) are now living in Coombe’s Cottages, Kelshall, Nr. Royston, Herts.
His parents were later recorded as living in Morden Heath, Steeple Morden, Royston, Herts.
Wartime Service
William enlisted at Ampthill, Beds, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment and issued with the service No. 22457. On completion of his training, he was sent to the Western Front.
William was Killed in Action on 15th September 1916, aged 26, during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (Battle of Flers-Courcelette 15th -22nd September 1916) which was the third phase of the Battle of the Somme (Battle of the Somme, 1st July – 18th November 1916), he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. Additional Information
His mother received a Dependents Pension of 3s 6d, a week from 10th July 1917, and his effects of 3s 9d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3-10s-00d.
