Robert Jackson was born on 15 October 1896, in Portsmouth,
Hampshire, son of John Willie Jackson a Royal
Navy Engine Room Artificer and Edith Jackson (nee Grigg). The eldest of six
children one died in infancy.
He was Baptised on 26 November 1896 at St Stephens Church,
Portsea, Hampshire, at the time the family lived at 147, Queens Road, Portsmouth,
Hants.
1901 Census records Robert aged 4, living with his parents,
brother Richard (1) and sister Gertrude (6 months) at, 130, Queens Road,
Portsmouth, Hants.
1911 Census records Robert aged 14, at school, living with
his mother, and four siblings still at 130 Queens Road. At the time of the 1911
Census his father was at sea aboard the Royal Yacht, HM Yacht Victoria &
Albert.
Wartime Service
Robert enlisted at St Albans, Herts, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 4/7179. On completion of his training Robert was sent to France arriving on 29 December 1915. He was Killed in Action on 10 October 1917.
Additional Information
His effects of £8-2s-9d, Pay Owing and War Gratuity of £14, went to his mother Edith. It is not known what connection Robert had to Borehamwood other than his parents moved to “North View” Shenley Road, Borehamwood, Herts, after his father retired from the Royal Navy. Note His father John Jackson had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, retiring with the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer. His service record shows he received the “Russian Gold Medal of St Ann” in 1909. He served aboard the Royal Yacht HM Yacht Victoria & Albert. Was aboard the Royal Yacht during the Fleet Review of 1911. He also served throughout WW1, in the Royal Navy and was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory Medals.
