Pre War
George John Jackson was born in Clerkenwell, Middx on 5 December 1881, the son of George and Henrietta Jackson and baptised on 15 January 1882 at St Jude's Church, Gray's Inn Road, Camden, Middx. They were then living at 141 Derby Buildings. He was one of seven children, but three died in infancy.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Risinghill Street, Clerkenwell when his father was employed as a Police Constable. George was educated at Hugh Myddleton School, Islington and left in 1894.
Mother died in 1896 aged 45 and his father resigned from the Police on 3 May 1897 and received a police pension. By 1901 his father moved to Rodney Residences, Clerkenwell and was working as bank messenger but George was not with the family.
George has not been found on the 1911 Census but his father was then living at 18 Ellesmere Road, Sunnyside, Berkhamsted, Herts, aged 64, and was living on his own and listed as a police pensioner with no occupation.
George gave his home address as Berkhamsted on enlistment.
