Pre War

Horace was born in 1898 in the Folly, Wheathampstead to Robert Izzard, a farm Labourer and Julia (nee Bozier).

On the 1901 Census the family consisted of parents, brother George (born 1880), and sisters, Harriet (born 1882) and Maud (born 1894). There were also brothers Thomas (born 1874), Alfred (born 1878) and sister Emily (born 1875).  On the 1911 Census Horace was recorded with his parents, brothers Thomas, and George (born 1909) together with his sister Maud and her husband Sidney Bandy.

Wartime Service

Horace enlisted on 19 May 1914 in the Hertfordshire Regiment as Private 2466 but was discharged on 8 Aug 1914 as being ‘medically unfit for further Military Service.  He later managed to enlist as Private 4249 in the Hertfordshires, but was later transferred as Private 203350 in Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment. His number resembles a 1917 Territorial number and is within the range of numbers issued to this Regiment. As no Service Record could be found his old four figure number cannot be confirmed.  Other records suggest that he served 5th Battalion, the combination of 1/4 and 1/5 Territorial Battalions. This Battalion was part of 62nd (West Riding) Division which fought of many of the Battles of the Hundred Days in Autumn 1918. Horace died of wounds on 6 Sep 1918.

A National Roll of the Great War entry has L/Cpl H Izzard of this Regiment being in France at the Battles of Ypres, Armentieres, Arras and 2nd Marne and dying in Rouen Aug 1919.
