Wheathampstead Village Memorial, Not on the Harpenden memorials

Frederick Thomas was born Wheathampstead in 1898 (baptised 28 Aug 1898) to Frederick Izzard, a farm labourer, and Ada. They lived at the Folly, Wheathampstead.


On the 1901 Census Fredrick was living with his parents and younger brother Henry G (born 1900) at Crabtree Lane, Harpenden. On 1911 Census the family of Frederick, parents, younger brothers Arthur (born 1902), Albert (born 1907) and Ernest (born 1909) had moved to Barber’s Lodge Cottages, Woodhill, Hatfield. Fredrick was still at school. His brother Henry had died in late 1901.

Wartime Service

Frederick was enlisted in the 1st Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment as Private 26330. No Service Record could be found for Frederick.


He was active with the Battalion in 1917 as he was wounded around Nov that year. His unit was involved in the Battle of the Canal du Nord between 27 Sep 1918 and 1 Oct 1918. Frederick was reported missing during this action and presumed to have died on 29 Sep 1918.


His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.

War Gratuity of £12 and arrears of £10 12s 3d paid to his mother.
