Pre War

Vincent Charles was born in 1891 (baptised 31 May 1891) in Nomansland, Wheathampstead to George Ivory, a labourer, and Ellen (nee Matthews). Vincent’s father died in 1891.

On the 1901 Census Vincent was living with his widowed mother at Nomansland  Wheathampstead with brothers Sydney (born 1885), an apprentice blacksmith, Walter (born 1887), a farm labourer and sister Grace (born 1895). On the 1911 Census Vincent, a farm labourer, was living with his mother at Nomansland with brothers Sydney, now a blacksmith, and Walter. There was an elder brother Herbert, born 1882.

Wartime Service

No Service Records could be found for Vincent Charles.

He was enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment in the 7th Battalion as Private 22672 and at some time transferred to 6th (Service) Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Both units were part of 54 Brigade, 18th (Eastern) Division. The division was engaged in the Battles of the Somme 1916 and Vincent may have taken part in the Battles of Albert, Pozieres Thiepval and Morval.

There seemed to be no major battles taking place on 28 Oct 1916 (but trench warfare involved shelling and raids) when Vincent was killed in action.

His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Mememorial to the Missing of the Somme.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £3 15s 5d was paid to his mother. Brother Sydney enlisted on 4 Nov 1915 in Royal Garrison Artillery and survived the Great War.
