Percy Impey was born in Flamstead in 1892 to Henry Impey, agricultural labourer, and Louisa (nee Jarvis). Louisa died in 1897.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Lindin Road, Markyate and consisted of father, William (agricultural labourer, born 1878), Elizabeth (Lizzie, born 1883, straw hat sewer), Harry (born 1886, straw carter), Annie (born 1890) and Percy,

Wartime Service

Percy enlisted as Private 9485 in the Bedfordshire Regiment probably about Aug 1909 (Service no 9460 issued 11 Jun 1909 and 9526 issued  31 Jan 1910.

On the 1911 Census Percy is recorded at Maida Barracks, Stanhope Lines, Aldershot with the Bedfordshire Regiment. His brothers and sisters had their own families by this time. His father may have married Ann Ginger at some time and he died in 1917.

While the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment had been in Ireland at the outbreak of the Great War they were soon deployed to France on 15 Aug 1914. Percy joined them on 6 Oct 1914 to take part in the Battle of 1st Ypres particularly the action at Nonne Bosschen (1 Nov 1914). In !915 the Battalion were involved in the action at Hill 60 (17-22 Apr). Percy was killed in action on 12 Jun 1915 in a period of no major engagements but when losses of men occurred through trench activity.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £8 10s 6d was paid to his Father Henry.
