Pre War
Arthur Charles Hyett was born in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, in 1885, son of William Hyett, a Groom/ Coachman, and Sarah (nee Perry). One of three children, Sarah (born 1883) and George W (born 1888). The 1891 Census records Arthur aged 5, living with his parents Sister Sarah (8) and brother George (3) at 24, Church Street, Chesham, Bucks. By 1901, Arthur (16), and his parents were now living in Rose Lane, Wheathampstead, Herts, his brother and sister were working away from home.
Arthur married Harriett Wrenn, the daughter of Jesse and Harriett Wrenn of Welwyn, Herts, in St Albans, in 1907. They were to have four children, Dorothy (born 7 Oct 1907), Arthur (born 2 Feb 1914), Charles Henry (born 4 Feb 1916) and Olive (born 10 Aug 1917).
The 1911 Census records Arthur employed as a Golf Greenkeeper, married to Harriett and they have one daughter Dorothy aged 3, and living in Gustard Wood, Herts.
Wartime Service
Arthur enlisted at Salisbury, Wiltshire, posted to the Dorsetshire Regiment with the service number 17996. No Service Record was found for Arthur. At some date he was transferred to the Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) with the service number 5399.
In April 1918 2nd Battalion Leinsters had become part of 88 Brigade 29 Division and were positioned in the Ypres Sector for the Final Advance in Flanders and took part in the Battle of Ypres (28 Sep -2 Oct 1918 and the Battle of Coutrai (14-19 Oct 1918). Arthur was killed in this latter action on 14 October 1918, aged 33.
Additional Information
War Gratuity £13 10s and arrears of £4 5s 8d was paid to his widow Harriet. She also received a widow’s pension of 33/9 a week for herself and the children from 14 July 1919,
