Pre War

Ralph Hutchins was born in 1892, the son of Arthur and Maria Hutchins, and the eldest of three children. He was baptised on 20 February 1892 at St John's Church, Egham, Surrey. His father's occupation was given as auctioneer.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at Egham Hill, Surrey where his father remained an auctioneer. They employed two servants. By 1911 they had moved to  Forge House, Egham at which time Ralph was working as an articled clerk to an architect & surveyor.

He travelled from Valparaiso, Chile to enlist, arriving on 6 April 1915 on the Pacific Steam Ship Victoria at Liverpool.

His parents later lived at Havant, Hants.

Wartime Service

He obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant with the 8th Battalion (Territorial) Duke of Cambridge's Own, (Middlesex) Regiment. It is likely he did not serve in France as no medals are listed on his medal index card.

Burial records show that he was resident in the Isolation Hospital, Sevenoaks, Kent and it is presumed Ralph died from an infectious disease on 3 June 1916, aged 24. He was buried on 6 June 1916 at Englefield Green Cemetery, Surrey.

Additional Information

His father received pay owing of £39 7s 6d.

The connection with Berkhamsted is not known.
