William Alfred Humphreys was born in 1895 in Bushey, Hertfordshire the son of Charles and Ada Mary Humphreys, and one of fifteen children.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Merry Hill Road, Bushey, Hertfordshire where his father was working as a navvy and remained in Bushey in 1911, then living at Oxhey View, Merry Hill Road, Bushey, at which time William was working as a gardener domestic. His parents were living at Pinner View, Bushey in December 1915.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in London on 25 August 1914 and joined the Middlesex Regiment, serving with them in France from 4 January 1915.
William was killed in action in France on 14 March 1915 at Neuve Chappelle but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 0s 9d. Pension card exists with his father as dependant but no pension amount is recorded.
N.B. the surname of Humphreys is spelled in several different ways on official records.
