Born in Birch Green, Hertingfordbury in 1890 son of William and Alice Humphrey of 12 Birch Green, Hertingfordbury.
He was a wheelwright.
Wartime Service
Was involved in a successful and crucial attack on the North-West part of Thiepval still in German hands on 26th Sep 1916. They then attacked and successfully gained the well fortified Schwaben Redoubt. William Humphrey was listed as killed in action during this engagement.
Additional Information
William is also commemorated on his parents’ headstone in Hertingfordbury (St. Mary) Churchyard. His part of the inscription reads:
ALSO HIS ONLY SON WILLIAM.
KILLED IN ACTION IN FRANCE SEPT. 30TH. 1916, AGE 27 YEARS.
“GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.”
