Pre War

George was born on 1 Feb 1894 in Harpenden to William Howell, a carter on a farm, and Mary Ann (nee Attwood).


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Heath Road, Harpenden. On the 1911 Census George’s occupation was hairdresser. He married Margaret G Rogers in 1917.

Wartime Service

George enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery as Gunner 94310 in Glasgow. He went to France on 27 Jun 1915.


He was serving with C Battery 295 Brigade RFA which were operating Howitzers and were attached to 59 (North Midland ) Div. In 1918 they were operating on the Lille Area when George was wounded, he died from these wounds on 7 Oct 1918.
