Pre War

George Howe was born in 1880 in Chiswell Green, Herts to Joseph and Elizabeth Howe.


On the 1881 Census the family were living at Chiswell Green where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. Living at Plaistows Cottage on 1891, next to Plaistows farm, St Albans. He married Ruth Ashwell in 1904 at Watford and they had two daughters Annie and Nellie. On the 1911 Census he was living at 6 Scrubbits Square, The Flats, Radlett, Herts with his wife and daughters, and mother in law Hannah Ashwell, and working as a market nurseryman.


His daughter Annie died in 1914.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford and served in the 12th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.


He was missing presumed dead on 21 January 1918 and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £7 13s 11d. She also received a pension of £1 5s a week for herself and her daughter Nellie.

On some records the surname HOWE is spelt without the 'E'.
