Pre War

Frederick Thomas Howe was born at St Stephens, Bricket Wood, Herts in 1897, the youngest son of Joseph and Elizabeth Howe.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Smug Oak, Bricket Wood where his father was working as a Horseman on a Farm. By 1911 they had moved to 31 Scrubbit Square, Radlett, Herts and Frederick was working as a Baker's Assistant. His parents later lived at 15 Cottage Flats, Radlett, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 17 August 1914 and joined the 11th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (General Service) and served in France from 31 May 1915. 


He was appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on 28 November 1916, then confirmed as paid on 1 June 1916. He was killed in action on 10 April 1917 during the Battle of Arras. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £12 and pay owing of £15 0s 6d. She was also awarded a pension of 5s a week from 6 November 1918.
