Pre War
Leonard John Howell was born on 25th June 1888 in Fulham, Hammersmith, London, the son of John and Esther Howell and one of six children.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at 3 Cliftonville Terrace, Battenburg Road, Richmond, Surrey, where his father was working as a Clerk of Works, Sewers. They remained in Richmond in 1901 but had moved to 37 Battenburg Road.
He emigrated to Canada and was living at 270 Murray Street, Brantford, Ontario, Canada on enlistment, giving his occupation as Moulder.
His parents later lived at "Highfield," St. Albans Rd., Apsley, Hemel Hempstead.
Wartime Service
Leonard enlisted on 20 January 1916 and initially served with the 125th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, later transferring to the 75th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment).
He was killed in action on 18 November 1917, aged 29, and is buried in Lijssenthoek Militaery Cemetery, Belgium.
