Pre War

Born in 1881 in Hertford son of Johanna Howard living in 7a Bircherley Street, Hertford in 1891, 1901 and 1911. He was a chimney sweep.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Hertford on 8 Nov 1915 formerly 5764 Hertfordshire Regiment but transferred to the East Surrey Regiment on 22 May 1917. He joined the battalion in the field on 18 Apr 1918 and sustained a gunshot wound to the jaw on 7 May 1918 and was transferred to Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup where he was treated by Mr Harold Gillies, Plastic Surgeon (Gillies Archive Record Number 744), but died there two years later.

David's headstone is place at the head of the family plot containing his parents.
