Thomas Herbert Johnstone Horsman was born in 1897 in Brome, Suffolk, the son of Alfred and Jane Horsman and one of three children.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Cottage, Broome, Suffolk where his father was living on his own means and employing two servants. They had moved to 21 St Augustine Road, Bedford by 1911 and Thomas was educated at Bedford Grammar School from 1909. He then attended Berkhamsted School and left in 1913.
His parents later lived at The Bungalow, Condette, Pas-de-Calais, France.
Wartime Service
Thomas enlisted in London and served with the 1st/14th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish).
He was killed in action on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 6s 11d.
