Pre War

Joseph Horn was born in Tring in 1885 to James Horn, boot & Shoemaker, and Emma (nee Delderfield).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, John (born 1881), Joseph, were living at 5 Harrow Yard, Tring . Also listed was Harry Jones a lodger. 


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Frances (born 1879, a straw plaiter), Joseph , Mary E (born 1892) and grandson Edward J (born 1901) were living at 57, Akeman Street, Tring.


Joseph married Elizabeth Hart on 17 Jan 1909.


On the 1911 Census Joseph , Emma were living at 84, Brook Street, Tring with their son Frederick James (born 17 Apr 1910). There would be another son, Robert Charles, born 17 Mar 1913.

Wartime Service

Joseph enlisted as Private G/29517 in the Duke of Cambridge’s Middlesex Regiment in May 1915, No Service Record was found for him. Joseph was posted to 2nd Battalion of the Regiment part of 23 Brigade 8 Division. They were to take part in the Battle of Albert (1 – 13 Jul 1916). Joseph was killed in action on the 17 Nov 1916 in a period when his Battalion was not taking part in a major engagement but was involved in actions in the Tranloy area  of the front line and subject to shelling etc.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £1 8s 6d was paid to his widow Elizabeth, she also received a pension of 22s 11d per week.
