Samuel William Hooper was born in St Pancras, Middlesex on 3 June 1893 the son of Samuel Hooper and Fanny Williams (sometimes using the surname Hooper). He was baptised on 12 July 1893 in All Saints Church, Caledonian Road, Islington, Middlesex. They were then living at 1 Penryn Street and his father was working as a Railway Guard.
On the 1911 Census Samuel was living with his father and mother at 51 Park Road, Bushey. His widowed father's occupation was recorded as pensioned railways inspector and Samuel was working as a photographer's assistant. His mother was recorded as housekeeper domestic.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Hertford and served with the 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment in France from 18 April 1915, initially being given the reg. no. of 3823 and later changed to 266145.
He was killed in action on 31 July 1917 during the attack on St Julien and is buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium.

Additional Information
His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week. She also received a war gratuity of £12 and pay owing of £2 17 6d. Her address was given as Art School Cottage, Rudolph Road, Bushey.
