Shenley War Memorial

Edgar Frank Hooper was born in 1887 in Shenley, the son of Richard and Sarah Hooper, who moved to Shenley in 1883, and was baptised on 13 October 1887 in Shenley. He was known as Frank.


On the 1891 Census the family were living in Harris Lane, Shenley, and his father's occupation was given as organist and music teacher. They remained in Harris Lane in 1901 at which time Edgar was working as a shoemaker's apprentice. His mother died in 1902 and at the time of the 1911 Census 'Frank Edgar Hooper' as he was listed, was a boarder at the home of Albert and Nellie Wilkins at 51 Verulam Road, St Albans, and working as a harness maker for Albert Wilkins. His father remained living in Shenley with Edgar's youngest siblings Grace and Herbert.


Before enlistment, Edgar was living at 73a Graham Road, Wealdstone, Middlesex.

Wartime Service

Due to his medical status Edgar was assigned to Cyclist Battalion under the Derby Scheme for Home Defence in Dec 1915, and sent home to await 'call up' after which he remained within the UK and served with the Essex Regiment, 2nd/8th Cyclists Battalion.


He died from pneumonia and Spanish Flu on 19 November 1918 at the Military Hospital, Ipswich on and is buried in Ipswich Old Cemetery, Suffolk. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £12 and pay owing of £11s 2d. His father obtained probate on 1 July 1919 with effects of £241 3s 8d. 



Brother of Sergeant Herbert Hooper who served in the Balkans, was mentioned in despatches, and survived the war.
