Pre War
Walter Horace Hood was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in the early part of 1899, son of Harry Parsons Hood a, Boot Maker and Florence Hood (nee Jest). One of three children.
He was Baptised in the Parish of Waltham Cross, Herts on the 5th February 1899.
1901 Census records Walter aged 2, living with his parents, and brother Bertis (4) at 15 Eleanor Cross Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His uncle Harry Jest (15) a Groom was living with the family.
1911 Census records Walter aged 12, living with his parents, brother Bertie (14) and sister Dolly (8), still at 15 Eleanor Cross Road.
His father Harry Parson Hood died in 1914, aged 42, the death was registered in Edmonton, Middx.
His mother Florence remarried in late 1915 to Frank J. Turner.
Wartime Service
Walter enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, posted to The Buff’s (East Kent Regiment) with the service number G/24780.
On completion of his training Walter went to France seeing action on the Western Front.
He was Killed in Action on the 20th September 1918, aged 19, he is buried in the CWGC Unicorn Cemetery, Vendhuile, France.
Additional Information
His mother Florence received a Dependents Pension of 7/6 a week from 8th April 1919, and his effects of £14-2s-2d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £6-10s-00d.
