Arthur was born in Kings Walden, Hertfordshire, in 1881
the son of James Holton (B 1855 in Kings Walden, Herts) and Emma (nee French)
Holton (B 1849 in Kings Walden, Herts).
Baptised in St Marys Church, Kings Walden, Herts on 14th
August 1881.
1891 Census records Arthur aged 9, living with his
parents, sisters Emily 12 and Mabel 1, at The Cottage, Dane Street, Luton,
Beds.
Arthur's mother Emma Holton died in 1906.
By 1911 Arthur had left home and was working as a
Domestic Gardener, Boarding with Mr & Mrs Alfred Barber in Ley Green, Kings
Walden, Herts.
Arthur married Ellan Ann Biggs from Darley Hall, Kings
Walden the daughter of Joseph and Alice Biggs, in St Marys Church, Kings
Walden, Herts, on 28th September 1912.
It is believed they had two daughters.
Wartime Service
Arthur enlisted in Hitchin, Herts.
He was a member of the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment with the service No 6730.
He landed in France on 19th September 1914.
Looking at his low service number and that he landed in France in September 1914, it is possible he was a member of the local Territorial Force prior to the outbreak of war.
Arthur was Killed in Action
on Sunday 7th November 1914, while attacking a German Trench Line,
he has no known grave and is commemorated on
the Le Touret Memorial to the missing.
Additional Information
His effects of £2-5s-1d, pay owing and £5, War Gratuity went to his widow Ellen Ann Holton.
