Edward Herbert (Bertie) was born in Harpenden in 1883 to William Holland. a labourer, and Charlotte (nee Burgess). They were living on Lower Cravells Road.


Bertie joined the Bedfordshire Regiment on 7 Oct 190 as Private 4074.On the 1911 Census he was lodging ar Marples Cottage and his occupation was auxiliary postman.

Wartime Service

Bertie was enlisted in the Bedfordshire regiment as Private 49652 and later transferred to 1st Battalion Kings Liverpool Regiment as Private 95226.


The Kings Regiment were involved in the 2nd Battles of Arras (1918) particularly the battle of Drocourt-Queant Line at Morchies where Bertie was reported killed on 4 Sep 1918. He is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
