Son of the late Robert Arthur and Emma Miranda (formerly THOMPSON, nee BUCK) HODGSON.
His parents married 20 January 1898 at St Michael’s, Aylsham, Norfolk. Emma died 1908 in the Hemel Hempstead, Herts, district aged 42, and was buried 3 September in Heath Lane Cemetery, Hemel Hempstead. Robert remarried 30 December 1909 at St John the Evangelist, Boxmoor, Herts, to Minnie WILFORD. He died 16 March 1913 in Boxmoor, Herts, aged 56, and was buried 20 March, also in Heath Lane Cemetery.
Robert was born 21 October 1898 in St Alban’s, Herts, and baptised 20 November 1898 at St Alban’s Abbey. He attended Boxmoor J.M.I. School from 24 September to 2 November 1906; and again from 13 January 1908 to 9 September 1910; then he attended Watford Grammar School from September 1910 to December 1912.
He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.
On the 1901 Census, aged 2 he lived in Boxmoor, with his mother and one sibling. On the 1911 Census, at school aged 12, he still lived in Boxmoor, with his father, step-mother and no siblings.
Recorded as born in St Albans and enlisted in Grimsby. Lincs.
Wartime Service
He enlisted at Grimsby, Lincs, and was formerly Private 59856 West Yorkshire Regiment. He was entitled to the Victory and British war medals, and was killed in action.
Additional Information
The published Watford Grammar School Book of Remembrance entry reads:
“HODGSON, ROBERT NELSON. School period: September, 1910, to December, 1912. Killed in action.”
Unfortunately, Robert’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
There is an article about Robert in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 9 November 1918.
