Pre War

John Lionel Hodges was born on 3 April 1892 in Islington, the son of Lionel Frederick Hodges and Mary Elizabeth (nee Ducker) and baptised on 3 September 1892 at St John, Highbury Park, Islington. The family were then living at 3 Sotheby Road, Islington, and his father was a gun maker.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 55 Elgin Road, Ilford, Essex where his father was employed in glass manufacture. By 1911 they were living at 27 Barnsbury Park, Islington and John was working as a Clerk.


On enlistment, he was living at Marlbrooks, Mountnessing, Essex. His parents later lived at The Ridge, Welwyn, Herts.

Wartime Service

John enlisted in Brentwood, Essex, joining the 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 21 October 1916 during the attack on Regina Trench, part of the Battle of Grandcourt, which itself was part  of the later Battles of the Somme. He is buried at Courcelette British Cemetery, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £4 and pay owing of £3 13s 9d. No pension appears to have been paid.
