Pre War
Albert Frederick Hodges was born in Chipperfield, Herts, on 18th December 1898, son of Albert Hodges (1874-1941) a Carman (Driver of a horse drawn vehicle) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hodges (1873-1960) (nee Biggerstaff). The eldest of two children.
1901 Census records Albert aged 2, living with his parents, in Chapel Croft, Chipperfield, Herts.
1911 Census records Albert aged 12, living with his parents, and sister Lillian 9, in Alexander Road, Kings Langley, Herts.
Wartime Service
Albert enlisted at Watford, Herts, on 11th November 1916, aged 17 years & 11 months. He was posted to the army reserve the following day the 12th November. Mobilized for war service on 19th February 1917, and posted to the 26th Training Reserve Battalion, with the service number 6589, later transferred to the 52nd Training Reserve Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
It is not known when Albert arrived in France.
He was posted to the Price of Wale’s (North Staffordshire Regiment) on 4th February 1918, with the new service number 41315, he was Killed in Action the following month, 26th March 1918.
Additional Information
His father, Mr. A. Hodges, Alexander Road, Kings Langley, ordered his headstone inscription: "TILL WE MEET OUR ONLY BOY MOTHER, DAD, LILY". His mother Elizabeth received a Dependents Pension of 7/- a week for life, from 15th October 1918. The value of his effects was £5-12s-10d, Pay Owing and £4, War Gratuity which went to his father Albert Hodges.
