Pre War

Ernest Douglas Street was born in Hinxworth, Herts in 1892, the son of Albert and Lavinia Street, and one of twelve children. He was baptised on 3 December 1892 at Hinxworth.

His father died in 1897, aged 31 and on the 1901 Census the family were living at Hill Cottages, Hinxworth. His widowed mother was working as a laundress and four older brothers, Louis, John, Arthur and Leonard, were working as agricultural labourers.

By 1911 he was one of three still living at home with his widowed mother. His brother Arthur was an invalid on sick benefit, but Ernest and his brother Leonard were working as farm labourers.

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 14 November 1914 and joined the Royal Army Service Corps (Motor Transport), initially serving in Egypt from 6 April 1915 and later returning to the Western Front.

He was admitted to 10th Convalescent Depot at Ecault (south of Boulogne) with bronchitis on 16 June 1918, followed by the 14th General Hospital, Wimereux with pneumonia on 2 August 1918.

On 8 April 1919 Ernest was placed in Z reserve and discharged as no longer physically fit on 25 April 1919 because of sickness. He claimed a disability pension, serial no. 140014, and was awarded Silver War Badge B192661.

Ernest died on 4 August 1919, aged 26, at the County Hospital, Ware, Herts and is buried in St Nicholas Churchyard, Hinxworth.

Additional Information

His brother, Harold Street, engineer, was granted probate of his estate in London on 19 December 1919, with effects of £112 12s.

His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week until she died in 1928. Her address on pension records was given as Rectory Corner, Hinxworth.
