Pre War

Son of Mary (nee BUNTING) and the late Thomas Ashley HOBSON.

His parents married 27 November 1876 at St Jude’s, Bethnal Green, London.  Thomas died 1911 in the Romford, Essex, district aged 59; Mary died 1922 in the Hackney, London, district aged 66.

William was born 1889 in Shoreditch, and possibly married Margaret McKENNA 1914 in the Islington, London, district.

On the 1891 Census, aged 2 he lived in Islington, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 11 he lived in Tottenham, London, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a printer’s labourer aged 21, he lived in Homerton, London, with his mother and two siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Shoreditch, London; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and died at 7 Canadian [Casualty Clearing Station ?], Etaples, of wounds received in action.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, William’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. His brother John died 16 September 1916 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.
