Pre War

Son of Mary (nee BUNTING) and the late Thomas Ashley HOBSON.

His parents married 27 November 1876 at St Jude’s, Bethnal Green, London.  Thomas died 1911 in the Romford, Essex, district aged 59; Mary died 1922 in the Hackney, London, district aged 66.

John was born 12 December 1897 in Hackney, and baptised 5 November 1909 at St Augustine’s, Hackney.

On the 1891 Census, aged 3 he lived in Islington, London, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 12 he lived in Tottenham, London, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a Private in the Lancashire Fusiliers aged 22, he was stationed at Miltan, Punjab, India.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 25 April 1915, and died of wounds recieved in action in Salonika.

Unfortunately, John’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.



His brother William died 1 November 1917 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.
