Pre War

Born in 1865 and was baptised on 18 Jul 1865 in Canterbury, Kent son of the Rev. Thomas and Emma (Denne) Hirst. Educated at Haileybury College and Keble College, Oxford (1884-87 M.A.). He married Emma Arabella Tattersall in 1887 but she died in 1911 and he then married Iris Temple Pinhorn on 17 Oct 1916 in Holy Trinity, Dover, Kent and had one son. He became a school master before he joined the Army. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in 1899, Lieutenant 1900, Captain 1902 and served in the South African War. Promoted to Major in 1907 and commanded the 3rd Bn. from 1st Jul 1912 until his death in Western Heights Military Hospital, Dover, Kent after an operation.
