Pre War

William Charles was born on 27 Aug 1888, He was the eldest son of Henry Hipgrave and Harriet E (nee Shadbolt).


His father was a stockman in 1901, when they were living in Datchworth. William was not with his parents in 1911. he married Florence M Charter in 1912.

Wartime Service

William enlisted at Hertford into the Norfolk Regt, and was killed just two weeks before the Armistice was declared.


In October1918 the 9th Norfolks had taken part in the Battle of the Selle .His effects record records his death as 21-23 Oct which would the last stages of the battle.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and pay arrears £2 2s 11d was paid to his widow Mrs. Florence Hipgrave. His brother Walter Charles also served in MGC and died in 1919 from meningitis following wounds. Younger brother Robert H served with Beds Regt & Royal Fusiliers being discharged in Jul 1918 with his Silver War Badge.
