Pre War

Leonard James was born in Little Missenden, Bucks on 2 May 1894 to Mark Hill, a coachman, and Kate (nee Wild).


On the 1901 Census the family were living at the Boot Inn, Bracknell, Berks where his father was the publican. On 1911 Census Leonard and his family were living at Bamville, East Common, Harpenden, where his father was working as coachman to Mr Child a chartered acountant.

Wartime Service

Leonard joined the Bedfordshire Regiment as private 14683 and was later promoted to Serjeant.


He went to France on 26 Jul 1915 with the 7th  Battalion. He was killed in action on 27 Sep 1916 during the capture of the village of Thiepval.


His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
