Pre War

Frederick was born in 1898 in Hitchin and christened on 21 Sep 1898 in Holy Savior Church, Hitchin. His parents were Alfred George and Sarah Ann Davies.


In 1901 the family were living at Studio Cottage, Nightingale Road, Hitchin. Present were both parents: Alfred (33) and Sarah (32), with Alfred and working as a railway ticket collector. Their children were: Alfred Henry (11), Rosa Ellen (9), Florence (7), Doris Marguerite (4), Frederick William (2) and Edith Eliza (6).


By 1911 the family had moved and were living at 36 Victoria Road Retford, Notts. Present were both parents, Alfred still working as a ticket collector for GNR. The census recorded they had been married for 22 years with 8 children, all living. Of the above children Florence and Edith were absent. New siblings were Francis Leslie (7) and Maggie (6).


In the SDITGW he was recorded as born in Hitching(sic) and enlisted in Retford.

Wartime Service

Frederick was formerly Private 91295, 7th T.R. Battalion and he did not go overseas until after the start of 1916.


He died of wounds

Additional Information

After his death £15 0s 8d pay owing was authorised to go to his Alfred, his father on 29 April 1919. Later, a war gratuity of £9 10s was calculated but its authorisation was not recorded.


His medal cards record his Alfred G Davies, Meech House, Ollerton Road, Retford, Notts.
