Pre War

William George was born in Harpenden in 1892 the second son to George Hill, farm worker, and Elizabeth Emma (nee Chapman). They lived at New Farm, near the Great Northern Railway Station, Harpenden.


On the 1911 Census Arthur was listed as a gardener domestic. There were 3 brothers and 5 sisters in the family.

Wartime Service

George joined the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 19070. He later became Private 19786 in the 10th Battalion Hampshire Regiment and joined them in the Landings on 3 Oct 1915 at Salonika, Greece.


He remained with them until his death in Hospital from pneumonia on 8 Oct 1918.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs E.E. Hill, nr Batford Mills, Harpenden, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: “NEVER FORGOTTEN FROM HIS MOTHER AND SISTERS”. War Gratuity of £18 10s and arrears of £28 10s 3d paid to his mother. His elder brother Arthur was killed in action in Gaza, Palestine on 2 Nov 1917.
