Pre War

Alfred Winifred Hill was born in Potters Bar in 1881 to Charles Hill, Bricklayer’s Labourer and Mary Ann (nee Cartwright). There were older siblings: Rose Ellen (born 1878), Edward (born 1879) and Alfred James (born 1880). 


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Alfred, William (born 1882), Frank (born 1884), Frederick (born 1887), Arthur (born 1888) and Albert S (born 1891) were living at Capel Cottage, Southgate Road, South Mimms.


On the 1901 His parents, Arthur, Albert and Bertie (born 1893) were living at Frampton Road, North Mimms.


On the 1911 Census Alfred was living with parents, Frank, Arthur, Albert S and Bertie (born 1893) at 3 Holly Cottages, Quakers Lane, South Mimms.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Alfred. Alfred was originally enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbyshire) Regiment as Private 5236. His service Number suggests he may have joined as a Territorial and nominal rolls have him serving as a Forester prior to his service with King’s Shropshire Light Infantry as Private 26202 in their 5th (Service Battalion. Alfred was present with his Battalion as part of the 14th (Light) Division to take part in the Battle of Langemarck (16-18 Aug 1917, part of 3rd Ypres, Passchendaele).


He was reported to have been killed in action on 21 Aug. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres.

War Gratuity of £5 10s and arrears of £4 17s 5d was paid to his mother.
