Pre War
Henry George Hicks was born in 1885 in Anstey, Hertfordshire, the son of Henry and Tamar Ann Hicks.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Cave Gates, Wyddial, Nr Buntingford, Herts, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. They had moved to 30 Townsend Street, Hertford by 1901 and 16 year old Henry, then called by his second name of George, was working as an errand boy.
He married Eliza Bonfield on 2 January 1907 at Wyddial and on the 1911 Census they were living at 13 Factory Terrace, Royston, where he was working as a general labourer. At that time they had two daughters, Eva and Cassie.
Wartime Service
He enlisted at Royston on 8 September 1914 and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 13993 and was posted to the 8th Battalion, but was discharged on 30 November 1914 as 'not being likely to become an efficient soldier', because he had a dilated irregular heart. However he must have been accepted as fit for service later in the war and served with the 23rd Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex) Regiment.
He died of wounds on 22 March 1918, probably at one of three Casualty Clearing Stations posted at Grevillers, and is buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £8 and pay owing of £10 8s 8d. She also received a pension of £1 5s 5d a week for herself and her two daughters. She was then living at 11 Factory Road, Royston, Herts.
