Pre War
James Edward Herbert was the son of James and Emily Herbert. He was a commercial traveller, living in Brisbane, Queensland. He was age 33 and a widower. He had a daughter, Florence Emily Herbert, who was living with her grandparents at Llan Goven, Cavendish Road, Coorparoo, Queensland.
Wartime Service
He enlisted on 1 May 1915 as a Lieutenant in the 26th Battalion, B Company. His unit embarked from Brisbane on board the HMT A11 Ascanius on 24 May 1915. He was later promoted to Captain and died of wounds on 17 April 1918. He was awarded the Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of his company in an attack. He displayed great energy and resource in consolidating the captured position, and then reorganising the troops on the whole battalion front. He was largely responsible for the success of the battalion operations.'
