Served as Edward William Herbert Allen.


Son of Susannah (nee BENNETT) HERBERT of Watford, and the late William Henry HERBERT.

His parents married 3 June 1895 at St Mary’s, Watford.  William died 1913 in the Croydon, Surrey, district aged 39.  Susannah died 19 July 1955 in Watford aged 83, and was buried 14 July in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.

Edward was born 19 August 1896 in Watford, and baptised 16 September 1896 at St Mary’s, Watford.  He attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School, Watford, from 11 January 1904 to 4 May 1906, and again from 12 June to 22 October 1906.  He resided in Thornton Heath, Surrey.

On the 1901 Census, aged 4 he lived in Watford, with his mother and no siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a schoolboy aged 14, he lived in Croydon, with his parents and no siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in South Norwood, Surrey; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and died in Egypt of wounds received in the first Battle of Gaza.

There is a Death announcement for Edward in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 26 January 1918; plus In Memoriams in the issues dated 30 March 1918 and 29 March 1919.


Edward is also commemorated on the family headstone in Watford Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:

ALSO OF PTE. EDWARD WILLIAM HERBERT. GRANDSON OF THE ABOVE [Edward & Susan Bennett). 2/4TH THE QUEENS R.W.S. REGT. WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR AT GAZA, PALESTINE, MARCH 26. 1917, AGED 20 YEARS.

Unfortunately, Edward’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
