Pre War

Ellis Henman was born in King's Walden, Hertfordshire, in 1885 the son of William Henman (B 1852, in King's Walden, Herts) and Alice (nee Lawrence) Henman (B 1860 in King's Walden, Herts).


1891 Census records Ellis aged 5, at school and living with his parents, brothers Albert 9, William 8, Frank 4 and sister Edith 1, in Breachwood Green, Herts.


He attended Breachwood Green National School.


1901 Census records Ellis aged 15, working as a  General Labourer on Farm, living with his parents, brothers Albert 19, William 18, Frank 14, Walter 5, sisters Edith 11 and Emma 8, in Breachwood Green, Herts.


1911 Census records Ellis aged 25, is still living at home with his parents, brothers Walter 15, James 6 and sister Helen 9, in Breachwood Green, Herts. He is working as a Contractors Labourer.


Ellis Henman married Clara Wiles, of Cobden Street, Luton, Beds, the daughter of Arthur Wiles. On 17th May 1916, in Luton, Beds.


He had worked for Builder Mr A. W. Butt, of Cromwell Road, Luton, Beds, prior to enlisting.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford, Beds, in February 1916. Posted to the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment with the service No 27814.


Ellis was Killed in Action on Monday 4th September 1916, he had only been in France about a month. 



Probably killed during the actions round Guillemont part of the Battle of the Somme. Battalion took heavy casualties of 17 officers and 289 Other Ranks between 3rd and 4th Sept. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing.

Additional Information

Part of 15th Brigade, 5th Division, XIV Corps. His effects of £2-4s-3d, pay owing and £3, War Gratuity went to his widow Clara Henman. Ellis’s younger brother Private 19546 Water Henman of the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment was Killed in Action just 11 days later on 15th September 1916, he has no known grave and is also commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing.
