Stanley George Heffer was born in Waltham cross, Hertfordshire on the 14th June 1898, son of Walter Heffer a Carpenter & Joiner and Sarah Heffer (nee Smith). The youngest of six children although one died in infancy.
Baptised at Holy Cross and St Lawrance, Waltham Abbey, Essex, on the 14th August 1898.
1901 Census records Stanley aged 2, living with his parents, brothers, Walter (13), William (12), Herbert (5) and sister Jessie (8) at 9 Sidney Road, Cheshunt, Herts. The family had a boarder James Hughs, a Metal Turner.
1911 Census records Stanley aged 12, at School, living with his parents, brothers Walter (23), William (22), Herbert (15) and sister Jessie (18) at, 61 Eleanor Road Waltham Cross, Herts. The family had a boarder Leonard Arkell a Chartered Accountant.
On leaving school at the age of 14, Stanley joined The Great Eastern Railway Company on the 7th August 1912, at their Bishopsgate, Accounting Office, as a Clerk.
Wartime Service
On the 3rd March 1917, aged 19, Stanley enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, On completion of his training he arrived in France with the 10th Battalion, Warwickshire Regiment with the service number 41326, seeing action on the Western Front.
He died on the 2nd June 1918, at 50th Casualty Clearing Station in Sezanne, of wounds received in action, he is buried in the Sezanne Communal Cemetery, Marne, France.
Additional Information
His mother Sarah Heffer received a dependents pension of 6/- a week from 7th January 1919. At the time his mother is recorded as living at 62 Totteridge Road, Enfield, Middx.
His Headstone inscription “THY WILL BE DONE” was requested by his father William Heffer.
His brother Private 6660 Walter Newman Heffer died on the 17th April 1917, of wound received in action and brother Private M2/188678 William Harry Heffer died on the 16th February 1919, in Germany.
