Pre War

Arthur Hebbs was born in 1879 in Redbourn, Herts, the son of John and Elizabeth Hebbs, and baptised on 4 May 1879 at Redbourn. On the 1881 Census, the family were living at Redbourn Common, where his father was working as a labourer and his mother a hat sewer. 


He married Rose Andrews in July 1899 in St Albans and on the 1901 Census they were living at Beeson End Cottages, Redbourn with their daughter Lily and he was working as a Horsekeeper on a Farm. By 1911 they had moved to 2 Station Road, Radlett, Herts, had a eight year old son called Herbert and Arthur was working as a car man for a building materials company. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in St Albans and served initially with the Army Service Corps in the Balkans from 1 November 1915 under Reg. No. R/4/095166. He was later transferred to the East Kent Regiment and served in France. 


He was killed in action on 17 July 1918 and is buried at St Venant-Robecq Road British Cemetery, France.

Additional Information

N.B. Some records give the date of death as 1917 (IWM) but CWGC states 1918.


His widow Rose received a war gratuity of £14 10s and pay owing of £21 2s 10d. She also received a pension of 13s 9d a week from 3 February 1919.
