Pre War
Frederick Joseph Hearn was born in Tring in 1895 to William Hearn and Annie (nee Batchelor).
On the 1901 Census the family of mother, Frederick, Albert George (born1896), and John were living in Hawridge, Bucks.
On the 1911 Census the family of father, mother, Frederick, Albert G, Edith Rhoda (born 1902). Harold William (born 1905) and Elsie May (born 1907) were living in Finch Lane , Amersham, Bucks.
No Service Record was found for Frederick who enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment as Private 10642 around Feb 1912 (serial 10706 was issued 1 Mar 1912) in 1st Battalion. At some time he was promoted to Corporal.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of the Great War 1st Battalion, part of 11 Brigade, 4th Division, Frederick and the Division landed at Le Havre on 22 Aug 1914 taking part in the retreat Battles of Le Cateau (26 Aug), Marne (7-10 Sep), Aisne 12-15 Sep) and the Battle of Armentieres (13 Oct-2 Nov). In 19153 the Battle of Ypres - St Julien (24 Apr- 4 May), Frezenberg (8-13 May) and Bellewaarde (24-25 May). In 1916 the Division were present on the Somme battlefield at the Battles of Albert (1-13 Jul), Le Transloy (1 18 Oct). In 1917 they were involved in the Arras Offensive at the battle of 1st Scarpe () and 3rd Scarpe () before moving to the Ypres sector for the Battle of 3rd Ypres, in the Battles of Polygon Wood (26 Sep-3 Oct), Broodseinde (4 Oct), Poelcapelle (9 Oct) and Passchendaele (12 Oct).
Frederick was killed in action on 21 Mar 1918 during the German Spring Offensive. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.
