Pre War
Alan Healey was born in 1888 in Bushey, nr Watford, Herts, the son of William and Martha Healey. (N.B. he is recorded on the birth index as William Alan Healey). He was one of ten children.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at 75 Paddock Road, Bushey where his father was working as a florist. They had moved to 22 Groves Road, Watford by 1901 and his father was then working as a domestic gardener.
He married Elizabeth Jane Mogford in 1909 at St Peter's Church, Tiverton, Devon and on the 1911 Census they were living at Avonside Cottages, Fordingbridge, Hants. His sister Mary was living with them and working as a kitchen maid. Alan was then a head gardener domestic. They later had two daughters, Hilda (1911) and Marjorie (1912).
His parents later lived at "Mabledon," 11 Tilmore Gardens, Petersfield, Hants.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Fordingbridge, Hants and joined the Hampshire Regiment, serving with the 10th Battalion in the Balkans from 5 August 1915.
Alan was killed in action in Gallipoli, aged 27, and death was presumed on or since 10 August 1915. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of 16s 5d. She also received a pension of £1 1s 0d a week for herself and her two daughters and gave her address as 35 Greenaway Cottages, Tiverton, Devon.
