Pre War

*1 We would like further evidence that we have found the correct man. If we have then on the Harpenden memorial he appears as E Haynes, Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery and in the St Albans Cathedral Diocese records he appears as Ewart Haynes, Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. No other likely candidate but Walter Ewart has yet been found, however apart from his enlistment in Watford no other Hertfordshire connection has been found, nor any connection to Harpenden. To add to the difficulty, he appears as Walter Edward Haynes in some military records, including SDITGW.

Son of Maud and the late Mr. Haynes, of 72, Sandholme Road, Brislington, Bristol.

The Soldiers Died In The Great War (SDITGW) database records that he was born in Swindon and he enlisted in Watford.
