Pre War

Born on 8 Jul 1869 in Southsea Island, Hampshire son of Admiral John Montagu Hayes C.B., R.N. and Julia (Coward) Hayes (later Mrs McCoy). Educated at United Services College 1884-86 and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 3 May 1890, Lieutenant 5 Apr 1893 and Captain on 22 Dec 1897. Promoted to Brevet Major on22 Aug 1902 and Major on 24 Jun 1908. He served in the South African War 1899-1902 including the relief of Ladysmith. He married Constance Frances Miller in 1904 in Edinburgh and had one son.

Wartime Service

He entered France on 4 Nov 1914 and was killed in action at Neuve Chapelle while leading his company which was mown down by machine gun and rifle fire.

Additional Information

United Services College, Westward Ho, Devon amalgamated with Imperial Service College in Windsor in 1912 and then moved to Haileybury College, Hertford Heath in 1942.
