Pre War

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Hill Side, Holywell Hill St Albans and George was an engineer’s boy. George married in 1899 to Elizabeth Kate Underwood. On the 1911 Census George is listed as a butcher and living in Hatching Green, Harpenden. There were children George Eric (born 1899), Kathleen Elizabeth (born 1906) and Edgar Leslie (born 1908). Elizabeth after becoming a widow moved to Windsor Street, Luton.

Wartime Service

George enlisted in Royal Fusiliers in London as Private (GS/13405) in the 25th Battalion (Frontiersman). This Battalion was formed in London on 25 Feb 1915 by the Legion of Frontiersman.

George went to East Africa with the Battalion embarking at Plymouth on 10 Apr 1915, arriving in Mombasa on 4 May 1915. The 25th Battalion took part in a bayonet charge against German African Forces at Lukiguru as part of Hoskins Force during a Flanking attack. The German force had been trailed from Handeni. George is recorded as dying on 29 Jul 1916 this usually means illness, and he was originally interred at Handeni, but may have been during this action as his death is recorded in Soldier’s Effects as at Lukiguru.
