Pre War

Christy William Young was born on 2 November 1884 in Croxley Green, Hertfordshire, the son of Christy Thomas and Annette Young.  He was baptised on 1 Feb 1885 at Croxley Green, Herts.

He was admitted to the Hackney Workhouse on 1 Aug 1896 but it is not known how long he remained there.

He married Florence Dewin on 16 May 1915 at St Paul's Church, Homerton. He gave his occupation as Carpenter and was living at 222 Glyn Road. Florence gave her address as 12 Durrington Road.

They had a daughter Florence Ellen on 23 March 1916 and were living at 12 Durrington Road, High Street, Homerton, at the time of enlistment.

Wartime Service

Christy enlisted in Canning Town, Essex, (London) and joined the 8th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment. He served in France from 7 August 1915.

He was killed in action on 25 September 1915 during an attack on German positions south of the Hulloch Road. The Berkshires suffered heavy casualties, many of them suffering from gas poisoning when the wind blew the gas back into their own ranks.  Only 6 of them returned safely. Christy is now buried at Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos, having been previously buried near where he died and reinterred at the end of the war.
